Edinburgh Fencing Club

Open Training Sessions

Due to the current coronavirus situation all EFC sessions are cancelled, the club is closed until further notice.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 19:00 – 21:45

These open fencing on the box sessions are for anyone over 10 years who already knows how to fence. We have fencers in all three weapons: foil, épée and sabre.

You can also take a private lesson from one of our coaches during the open training sessions.

If you take one of our classes and would like to come along to the open training sessions, just ask your coach if you are ready.

Equipment

The club has a limited amount of fencing kit available for new fencers to borrow during beginners courses and training sessions at no extra cost. However, all club members and visiting fencers need to provide their own fitting glove, mask, and breeches. For all other kit - plastron, jacket, as well as weapons and electric kit - we do encourage all fencers to start acquiring their own kit as soon as they can. For friendly no obligation advice on what kit to buy, please speak to our Armourer Martin, or one of the club coaches.
You will need to wear long fencing socks and indoor trainers or fencing shoes.

Cadet Fencing Classes

We recommend children to be eight years old before starting metal foil fencing, while for sabre fencing we suggest children to be at least ten years old. But with all activities, some children are capable earlier, others a bit later.
We invite interested children and parents to visit the club during a Wednesday Class to speak to the coaches and join for a trial session.
We recommend starting with a 5 weeks Beginners Course (see below) to introduce children to the sport before joining the cadet classes as a club member.

Cadet Foil Class
Wednesdays, 18:00 – 19:30

Cadet Sabre Class
Wednesdays, 18:00 – 20:00

Wednesday night is Juniors' night. Don McKenzie and Andy Alderman run a foil class, while Naomi Farmer works with the sabreurs. After a joined warm-up the class splits the foilists and sabreurs for their footwork session and weapon specific fencing training.

Cadet Sabre Class
Thursday, 19:00 – 20:30

This fun and action-packed class is for sabreurs of all levels. Working with Naomi Farmer, you play some games to warm-up, learn how to chase down your opponent (and run away!) during the footwork session, practice how to score points in the blade skills and tactics session, and finally put your new skills to use as you challenge your classmates to fence.
(Please note: This class is currently full. Experienced sabre fencers, age 10 to 16, please get in touch with coach Naomi to discuss options.)
